Tasting Belize One Rum Cocktail At A Time

FOR NATIONAL RUM DAY

Rum is a Caribbean staple

For National Rum Day, we must certainly acknowledge this. From holiday specialties to a drink during an after-work lime, rum can be found in many types of cocktails around the region. While rum is a product of the Caribbean’s slavery past, today, however, only a few companies have mastered the art of distilling, aging, and blending. The sugarcane industry is alive and well today. Top Caribbean producers of sugarcane include Guyana, Barbados, Jamaica, and Belize.

RUM IN BELIZE

Unlike most of the Caribbean, the sugarcane industry came to Belize much later, in the 1850s. British Honduras, as it was known at the time, was a hub for the logwood industry, and the British imported rum from neighboring British Caribbean nations until that time. Modern Belizean rum industry as we know it began in the 20th century, with Traveller’s Liquors founded by the Perdomo family in the 1950s. This was followed by Cuello’s Distillery in the early 1960s, and L&R Spirits after, both founded by members of the Cuello family. These three distillers are the oldest and largest in the country.
